Here's an example. See how many "mistakes" this parent made and see if you can figure out some Positive Discipline alternatives she might have used.
Mom and son, about 3 years old.
She tells him to "go potty." He says "no."
She says, well, at least stay with me while I go potty. Then she yells at him for moving away and says, "I'm going to tell Daddy." "Stay here,." "That does it. I'm taking away all your action figures." and "You're in trouble now." When she's done, she says, "Good girl" to the boy's sister (who has apparently used the potty) and tells her that her brother is in trouble because he was bad.
Wow. What would you do in a similar situation? I have some ideas, and I want to hear yours.
This got me thinking (of course). I bet that Mom would say that her son "doesn't listen" and to all parents who say that, I ask: Are you saying anything worth listening to?
